About Us
Plastination is a means of tissue preservation that allows the model-like specimen to be dry, lifelike, and easy to handle. The plastination is a process that begins with real tissues obtained from an animal or human that becomes infused with silicone for long-lasting preservation. Tissue will not decay. Tissues require no special storage equipment, as it becomes a real-life plastic model.
Casts of lungs contain no tissue at all. Lung airways are injected with silicone and after allowing the silicone to harden, the lung tissue is removed. The resulting product is an exact cast of the airways throughout the lungs to bronchioles <0.5mm in diameter.
Plastination process is the same used to create the specimens for the world-famous Body Worlds ™ exhibitions.
Ellen Savoini is a pioneer in developing the technique for maintaining flexibility of a plastinated knee joint for dynamic presentations showing the motion of the knee and role of the ligaments and menisci. She has also advanced the technique for eye preservation to highlight the retina and ciliary body around the lens. Her work was presented at the International Conference on Plastination in Dalian China in 2018.
